One of the most common doubts moms have about starting virtual assistant work isn’t about skills, it’s about time. When your days are broken into short stretches between responsibilities, it can feel unrealistic to believe those moments could ever translate into real income.
In this episode, Laura Nicole breaks down why those small pockets of time are not something you need to “outgrow” before you can start earning. She walks through how brief work sessions throughout the day can add up faster than you think, and why focusing on total hours worked (not perfectly blocked schedules) changes everything.
If you’ve ever wondered how working 10 or 15 minutes at a time could possibly make a difference financially, this conversation will help you see your schedule and your earning potential in a whole new way.
What you’ll learn in this episode:
- How pockets of time throughout your day can add up to consistent weekly income
- Why you don’t need long, uninterrupted work blocks to start making money as a VA

Welcome to Your Virtual Assistant Coach, the podcast for moms who want to make money from home on their own terms. I'm your host, Laura Nicole, a successful six-figure earning VA and coach who replaced my college professor's salary in just five months back in 2020 after my daughter was born, and I have never looked back. I'm here to help you build a profitable, flexible VA business that fits into your family's lives so you no longer feel like you're living just to work. Let's dive in.
Laura Nicole: 0:33
You have probably heard me say before that one of the biggest reasons that virtual assistant work is so freaking flexible is because you can work in the nooks of your day. You can work in those small 10, 20, 30-minute pockets of time that we have amidst the chaos of mom life. And I stand by that 100%, 10 toes down. Okay, you do not need hours of uninterrupted time to be able to make money as a VA. But recently I was chatting with a woman on Instagram and she asked me a really, really good question that got me thinking that maybe this was something that some of y'all were quietly wondering too. And the question that she asked me was if I'm only working 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there, how does that actually stack up to any amount of significant money? And I 100% understand where she's coming from, right? When you look at just 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there, yeah, those sound really small, tiny bits of time when you're looking at them in isolation, right? And so it's very easy to wonder how am I actually going to be making money when I'm only working 15 minutes at a time? But the important thing here is that it's not actually about the pockets of time, it's about the total amount of time worked that those pockets add up to.
Laura Nicole:1:59
And so, yes, I want you to hear me say over and over again that you can do this in the pockets of your day because that is why this work is so doable and such a good fit for moms. But when we're thinking about the money and the amount that we can be making and bringing in and creating for our families, we have to not look at the individual pockets. And in this case, we need to start looking at the bigger picture of the total hours of what those small pockets add up to. And most women have a lot more of those little pockets of 10, 20, even 30 minutes at a time throughout their days that they even realize. So they really can add up quickly. For example, let's say that you work 15 minutes in the morning before your kids wake up and you have to get everybody ready and get out the door. And then if you work a full-time job, you pop in 10 minutes at the end of your lunch break before you're done. Or if you're a stay-at-home mom, you do 10 or 15 minutes while your kid is eating lunch or having their tech time or their independent play. And you have those little 10 to 15 to 20 minute pockets that pop up. And then maybe you do have a solid 30 or 45 or 60 minutes to work at night after the kids are in bed, for example.
Laura Nicole: 3:14
You add those up, right? You add up those little mini 10 to 15 minute pockets plus that one longer chunk that you have. And now you're looking at two hours a day, right? Two hours a day, five days a week, that's 10 hours a week. All of a sudden, those 10 minute bits of time have become 10 hours of work that you have done. And let's say you're charging $30 an hour, right? 10 hours a week, $30 an hour, that's 40 hours a month and $1,200 that your client would be paying. And I do that math for you just to show how quickly those little pockets truly can add up. And if you are looking to make that $500 to $2,000-ish doll a month, right? That means we're working somewhere between five and 20 hours a week, depending on the rates that we are charging. And using this nooks of the day, right, approach to getting your work done absolutely works for you. If that is the amount of hours you are looking to work and the amount of income that you're looking to create.
Laura Nicole: 4:18
Now, obviously, being realistic, right? If you're wanting to work 20 to 40 hours a week and you're wanting to create a full-time income from your VA work, then yes, eventually you will need to have some longer blocks of time that you are getting work done simply because you are working way more hours. But that doesn't mean that you can't start with the pockets, right? You have to build your way up to that income. And so even if that is the ultimate end goal to really start and get things going as a virtual assistant, you can 100% be making good money and building it up working in the pockets of your day. And truly, this is the power, right? This is the beauty of making money as a virtual assistant is that you get to be the one to decide. You get to be the one who decides how much you're working. Are you working five hours a week? Are you working 20 hours a week? You get to determine what fits into your day and into your routine that is comfortable. And you get to decide when that work actually happens. You have control over how fast you build and the clients that you work with.
Laura Nicole: 5:24
There's no boss that is deciding your schedule or telling you how much you have to work and when it has to be done. You get to be in charge and build this income based on your life and what works for you and for your family. You simply don't need perfect conditions or unlimited time. You just need to use the time that you already have intentionally. Hopefully, this has helped you see how those little pockets can actually turn into some solid cash landing in your bank account. And I also wanted to share with y'all that I am hosting my first ever free three-day virtual assistant challenge starting on Monday, January 26th. And each day of this challenge, you are going to get a pre-recorded lesson from me that's going to be 15-ish minutes long. And then at the end of each lesson, you are going to get an action step, like a little mini assignment to go do. And if you're listening to this episode, thinking like, okay, where are those pockets of time? Like when do I have those pockets of time on a daily basis?
Laura Nicole: 6:33
Then I need you to drop down in the show notes real quick, register for this challenge if you're not already registered for it, because one of the action steps that we're going to do is specifically designed to help you identify what those small pockets of time are so that you can figure out when they can happen, how you can use your time more intentionally, and give you an idea of how many hours per week you could be working to start and have it fit into your current routine. I'm also going to walk you through what VA work really looks like, uh, how to start using the skills that you already have. And again, we're going to look at how to take those small pockets of time and turn them into real actual income. So if you're ready to stop wondering if this could work and start seeing how it could work for you and look at how to actually monetize these pockets of time that you have, head to the link in the show notes, get registered, join us for the free challenge, and I will see you there next week.
